Librarians on Vacation: I have a book problem

Hi my name is Suzanne, I’m the Adult Programs Librarian at the Downtown Library and I have a book problem.

I love reading and I read fast, a combination which has caused me many difficulties. Mainly back pain from very heavy bags filled with books. If I don’t carry with me 25 books, how on earth will I survive a two week beach vacation?

Digital books are my new favorite thing. Now I can have all of the books I want in my pocket. I can read in line at the super market. I can read while I walk from one end of the building to the other (warning: this ability to walk and read has been cultivated over many years of practice; don’t try this at home!). I can read in the car while my husband drives and when I finish a book I CAN DOWNLOAD ANOTHER ONE WITHOUT STOPPING!

This can be a very expensive habit which is why I was delighted to discover the Overdrive app.

The Huntsville Madison County Public Library has a great collection of digital and audio books that you can download for FREE with your library card. I downloaded the newest Overdrive app named Libby and I was off. It was super easy to use so I just found a genre I was interested in, sorted the books only by what was available to check out now, and started scrolling through.

Downloading the books themselves was as easy as a tap on the screen. I downloaded about 5 books figuring that would get me through the travel portion of my trip when I had no Wi-Fi. Once I got through security and was waiting at the gate I pulled up my first book and read. And read and read and read. It was GLORIOUS! As soon as I finished those five I returned them and checked out a few more.

Finish those? DOWNLOAD MORE!

The last batch I checked out I haven’t returned yet, but that’s okay! no need to worry about overdue fees, the app just removes them when my time is up. Libby, I am in love! Some books I read and thoroughly enjoyed on my trip:

Soundless by Racheal Mead

Tuesdays at the Castle and

Wednesdays in the Tower by Jessica Day George

The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde
