Genre Book Lists for Youth

Not every school does it, but many schools have either begun to require students to read in every genre or offer them incentives to do so.  Finding books that fit every genre can be tough since we do not organize them by genre in the public library.  We simply do not have the room.  If you are one of the people needing help with this I have made a handy list that can get you started down the path of genre reading.  Happy Reading!

Fantasy

Fantasy is a story that could not happen in real life, often involving magical or supernatural elements, such as talking animals.

Historical Fiction

In historical fiction, the story didn’t really happen but it is based on actual events in history.

Mystery

A mystery involves a secret or crime that needs to be solved, usually by the end of the story.

Realistic Fiction:

Realistic fiction is fiction that could take place in real life.

Science Fiction is usually set in the future and ties in with science and technology. (STEM Stories)

Traditional Fiction

Traditional fiction is stories passed down from one generation to the next like tall tales, folk tales, and fairy tales.

Informational – Nonfiction

Nonfiction provides factual information about a topic - fact based.

Biography

A biography is an account of someone’s life written by another person.

An autobiography is an account of someone’s life written by that person.  They wrote it themselves.
