New DVDs to the HMCPL Collection
We have recently added a dozen new movies on DVD and Blu-ray to the HMCPL Collection. They can be put on hold and picked up at any branch of your choosing. It is a mix of new to DVD titles and some more familiar titles that are perfect for when you want to enjoy an old favorite.
Becky (2020) NEW RELEASE
A father-daughter weekend to reconnect goes horribly wrong when a group of convicts crash the retreat. Kevin James is the head creep. Chicago Sun Times critic Richard Roeper called it "A gory, blood-spattered fever-dream take on Home Alone."
Candyman (1992)
The classic terror tale by Clive Barker about a student researching urban legends and then encountering a benevolent soul who is said to appear after saying his name repeatedly into a mirror was adapted into this modern horror classic. The original is getting an updating in a “spiritual” sequel from writer-director Nia DaCosta and writer-producer Jordan Peele in 2021. If it has been a while since you’ve seen it, or if you have never seen it, you probably want to give this a watch before the new film is released. It stars Tony Todd and Virginia Masden.
The Deeper You Dig (2020) NEW RELEASE

This British produced horror tale concerns a family who experiences a night of terror after inviting their neighbors over for Christmas dinner.
A Killer Next Door (2020) NEW RELEASE
Based on the 1971 murder spree of John List, the film centers on a teenage girl who suspects her neighbor is the man responsible for the vicious crimes.
Memento (2000)
Early film by writer-director Christopher Nolan is an intricate mystery thriller about a man with short term memory loss trying to find his wife’s murderer. A remake has been announced so there’s no better time than now to brush up on the original.
The Rental (2020)
This terror-thriller centers on two couples who rent an ocean side getaway for a celebratory weekend only for the party to go horribly wrong. Dave Franco writes and directs his wife Alison Brie. The Hollywood Reporter calls it "Blood-curdlingly Horrific."
Road House (1989)
The one, the only, the original! Patrick Swayze is Dalton, a Zen-master in the art of redneck bar fighting. He’s hired to clean up the Double Deuce honkytonk and goes against the town grease-ball Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara). Swayze turns humdrum barroom brawling into a beautiful ballet of brutal jaw jacking and vicious chest cracking. Sam Elliot shows up to be cool and break some faces. I hope your TV is big enough to handle this non-stop action assault!
Starman (1984)
Many forget that horror master John Carpenter also directed this first rate science-fiction adventure about alien Jeff Bridges coming to earth, befriending widow Karen Allen and fleeing from “agency men” who want to strap him down to an autopsy table to see what makes him tick. This is a sweet, funny, well-acted adventure that is appropriate for family movie night.
Uncle Buck (1989)
The comedy classic about loud but lovable slob Uncle Buck who has to babysit his nieces and nephew when his brother's family has an emergency. It stars John Candy and was written and directed by John Hughes. This is an essential comedy from the '80s that gave the world Macaulay Culkin.
World War Z (2013)
Zombies, zombies, zombies! Brad Pitt tries to save the world against a virus that enables the dead to come back to life. Based on Max Brooks' novel. The Madison branch has two copies for loan, the PG-13 rated DVD theatrical version as well as the Blu-ray version that also includes the Unrated version as well as a 3-D version for anyone who has a 3-D capable TV and player.
