Wet Felting at North Huntsville Public Library

Adult programming at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) seeks to create meaningful activities where adults can connect with their community members. One such program that has become popular among patrons is the recurring Wet-Felting Workshops at the North Huntsville Public Library (NHPL) Branch.

Driven by a similar purpose, award-winning textile artist and workshop instructor Kami Watson designed the class to share her craft and create a safe space for participants to explore creatively. With NHPL's help and a generous Verdant Fund grant, she brought her vision to life through free monthly workshops at the NHPL Makerspace Studio. 

Workshops are led by demonstration, as Watson explains the process and a bit of history before walking patrons through the steps. She has taught patrons how to create flowers, hearts, and wearable jewelry. With Wet Felting being a relatively slow process, patrons can mingle and get to know each other as they complete the day's project. 

Melinda, the Makerspace Tech at NHPL, has "loved having the fiber arts" available at the Library as it has created an "energized community for learning and creating." Melinda mentioned that many patrons bring a friend while others make friends there. Many newcomers are drawn in by word of mouth. Since its onset in January 2024, it has been incredibly well received. With classes filling up as soon as they open and each boasting a full roster and waiting list, we hope to continue having these workshops in the future so that all can enjoy them.
