Like so many public institutions and services, the Technology Training Center is adapting to all of the changes in the world to keep serving the Huntsville community. These changes have resulted in our department to increase our online presence. During July and August, we started offering online instruction for Excel and Word, our more popular classes. We have since expanded our online catalog to include PowerPoint and advanced Excel classes.

The Superhero I Did Not Realize I Needed

If someone asked me 3 years ago, "Who's your favorite superhero?" I would respond, "Batman, of course." The reason being, he is a regular guy without "superpowers," intelligent, rich, handsome, mysterious, the strong silent type, a man-of-few-words. Haha.

However, someone has taken Batman's place as my favorite superhero. Someone who has had an impact on people not just in comics as Black Panther but in real life-- that someone is Chadwick Boseman.

I know everyone has written, spoken, and posted about Chadwick Boseman's departure from us. I am still saddened and more likely will continue to be for a while. The thing is he represents what I wish of myself and others could be. You can tell he cared about his craft and wanted to tell the stories of the characters he portrayed.

Not sure if I am just speaking for myself here, but a nice getaway would be wonderful right now. But, since that will not be happening anytime soon, I'll just have to imagine being away. I mean, like on the level of "Calgon, take me away..." Do y'all remember that slogan? Yes, I took it wayyyy back!

So, I figure a book can provide me with the escape I need for now. Even when I am finally able to go somewhere, then I could STILL bring a couple of these books with me.

Here are 10 books to try out:

Do You Have a Reluctant Reader?

With food, kids can be fickle, picky, or just plain unwilling to try something new. Umm, and did I say picky?! Well, the same can be said for reading. There can be so many reasons why a child is reluctant to read.

Here are some of the reasons I have encountered tutoring kids:
  • They are not good at it. They find it difficult so they do not want to.
  • "Reading is boringggggg...."
  • They are not motivated.
  • The book does not have enough pictures. Too many words.
Some things they cannot or don't tell you:

The year 2020 has presented a lot to us. Between Netflix's documentary hit Tiger King, a pandemic, quarantining due to the pandemic, talk of murder hornets, postponement of the Olympics, racial justice movements (please and thank you), sky-rocketed unemployment, AHHHHH! we have endured and still dealing with quite a bit. However, I am a glass half full kind of person, so I believe we will get through this and be stronger because of it.

In the meantime, I have to read to help me cope. So, I'm sharing my list of "next reads" and recommended reads. Hope you enjoy!

By the way, my taste is all over the place-- so don't judge me :-)
