“It’s out of paper!” You scream in terror as your printer (leisurely printing your homework), grinds to a stop. You look around, but there is no extra paper to be found. These days, a simple run to the office supply store can solve your paper needs. However, paper has not always been as accessible.

In the 19th Century, letter-writing was a surprisingly expensive task. Producing paper was not cheap, and buying quality paper came at a cost. Early in the century, postmasters began charging for distance traveled and the weight of paper. Combine the price of paper with the budding idea of paying for postage – writing to loved-ones suddenly became a line item in the family budget. This added expense led many to find ways to save on paper.

Bestselling author David Grann comes to Huntsville for library fundraiser

Author hailed as master of spinning true crime tales

The Huntsville Library Foundation (HLF) proudly presents bestselling author David Grann as the guest of honor and keynote speaker at HLF’s 32nd annual Vive le Livre gala on Thursday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the Jackson Center, 6001 Moquin Drive. The event will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner and keynote address by Grann.

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library proves once again that it is not only serving the needs of the community, but doing so in a technologically-driven environment. The library was recently awarded a $7500 Digital Inclusion Fund Grant by the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville, sponsored by Google Fiber.

The grant funds will be used to create a Workforce Development Lab for those who need digital assistance to secure employment or job advancement. The lab will be located on the second floor of the Downtown Huntsville Library. The Technology Training Center will manage the lab during scheduled times.

The lab will offer the following services:

Each community has its unique cultural makeup. Some groups may be just arriving, and others may have lived in the area for decades. An example of this is the Mississippi Delta Chinese who migrated to the Mississippi River Delta over a century ago and prospered in the region by operating small grocery stores. The population grew as relatives of early migrants also joined them.  Their existence in Mississippi led to a mixture of both Chinese and Southern culture that can be seen in the cuisine and Southern accents of the Chinese who hail from that area.

Summertime at the library is exciting! We like to shake things up a little as the weather gets warmer and offer many entertainment, educational and cultural enrichment opportunities for our patrons. There is truly something for everyone at the library.
