On June 22, we celebrate the birth of Octavia E. Butler, a world-renowned dystopian and science fiction writer. Octavia E. Butler was born in Pasadena, California in 1947 and died on February 24, 2006. She won several awards including the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant and Hugo Award for Best Novelette for her fascinating and poignant works that explored racial injustices, climate change, and several other critical topics.

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th and is also called Emancipation Day, Liberation Day, Jubilee Day, or Freedom Day and celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the United States and originated in Glaveston, Texas on the date in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom from slavery in the state of Texas. In the 21st century the holiday is celebrated throughout the United States in a variety of ways, I've been together a few of books from our collection to share with your children to learn more about the history behind this holiday:
